The Word That Works, Pt. 2
Passage: 1 Thessalonians 2:13–2:13
In this sermon podcast on 1 Thessalonians chapter 2:13 Pastor Brent completes a 2-part series answering the question, “How does the Word of God work in those who believe?”
Beginning in 1 Thessalonians 2:13, and for a second time in the letter, the Apostle Paul expresses his thankfulness for the Thessalonians. On this second occasion the Apostle expresses his thankfulness for the manner in which they received the Word of God. As Paul describes the manner of their reception, we obtain “3” ways that the Word of God performs its work in the life of the believer.
First, the Word of God works through its proclamation. Paul had faithfully proclaimed the Word of God to the Thessalonians and it is through that proclamation that they received the Word.
Second, the Word of God works when it is received with authority. The Thessalonians not only received the Word, but accepted it for its truthfulness and its full authority. The believer must surrender his or her will to the authority of God’s Word before it can work.
Third, the Word of God works by restoring the heart and renewing the mind. Paul states that the Word, which they had received and accepted, performed its work “in” them. The Word transforms every believer from the inside out first transforming and renewing both heart and mind. It is this powerful work that God uses as His divine instrument to both transform and mature the life of the believer.
