Kingdom Seekers, Pt. 1
June 12, 2016 Speaker: Brent Small
Topic: Kingdom Passage: Matthew 6:1–6:4
In this sermon podcast on Matthew 6:1-4, Pastor Brent challenges us with 2 “urgent commands” concerning giving so that you will genuinely live out the righteousness of God.
Is God and His righteousness the priority of your life? As Christians, we must take time to evaluate our walk with the Lord. The world’s lures, the pressures of life, trials, circumstances, you name it - it can all creep in suddenly, and anything but God is on the throne of our hearts.
Yet, we have been redeemed and transferred into the Kingdom of God. God is now the center of our lives and it is His kingdom and His righteousness that must be our pursuit. How do we know this? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs every Christian to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.
The Sermon on the Mount is a powerful message from Christ that confronts the sinner concerning any attempt at a works-based righteousness and leads the sinner to the true path to salvation and righteousness that is found in Christ and His gospel. However, the Sermon on the Mount is also instructive for believers.
In chapter 6, Jesus confronts the spiritual leaders of Israel concerning their “phony” practice of righteousness. They, along with the people, needed to repent and believe upon Jesus. However, Jesus’ words in chapter 6 are also instructive. They teach us, as believers, how we must live out the righteousness of God in a manner that is genuine, authentic and honoring to Him. In fact, Jesus teaches us how and He elevates the importance: it must be the priority of every Christian life.
